Piet Hein Eek Junior Bed - Scrapwood

This is a junior bed by Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek, executed in his characteristic scrapwood style. The bed combines new pine for the interior and frame with recycled scrapwood on the exterior, giving it the typical raw and authentic look for which the brand is known. The bed is intended as a toddler or junior bed for children who have outgrown their crib. In the photos, the bed is shown without a mattress and is set up outdoors. Its exact history of use is unknown, but based on its visible condition, it has seen normal family use by one or more children. The slatted base is present and appears to be in good condition.

✔️ Specifications

• Year of manufacture: Unknown. Estimated: between 2010 and 2020, based on the condition of the scrapwood and the style, which has been in production for a long time.
• Dimensions: External dimensions approximately 159 x 75 x 65 cm (width x depth x height). Mattress size 150 x 70 cm. These are common sizes for this model based on comparable sales; please verify upon collection.
• Suitable for age / weight:
  • Suitable for toddlers and preschoolers, generally from approximately 1.5 to 2 years up to about 6 to 7 years.
  • The bed is on the smaller side for children older than 6-7 years; experiences from other parents confirm that children outgrow it around that age.
  • A maximum weight has not been officially published, but the bed is robustly constructed from solid wood.
• Additional information / special features:
  • The bed consists of a combination of new pine (interior, end grain) and authentic scrapwood (exterior), which creates its characteristic look.
  • Slatted base is present and in good condition.
  • The bed is exclusive of mattress; a mattress of 150 x 70 cm will fit.
  • The bed is disassemblable and can be taken apart with minimal tools.
  • Piet Hein Eek has released several pieces of furniture in a similar material style (dressers, cribs), with which this bed combines well.
• Safety information:
  • The scrapwood naturally has a rough and irregular texture; check for protruding nails or splinters before use and lightly sand if necessary.
  • The raised edges on all sides give the child a safe and secure feeling.
  • As with any children's bed: preferably place the bed against a wall and supervise young children.

🔧 Present damage

The following can be seen in the photos:

• The exterior of the bed is made of scrapwood with remnants of old paint (white/grey), flaking paint layers, and discolouration. This is inherent to the design and not damage but part of the scrapwood aesthetic. On the bottom planks, the flaking of old paint is quite pronounced.
• On the inside of the headboard (photo 3), light scratches and signs of use are visible on the pine, most likely from toys or nails. This is cosmetic and does not affect function.
• The corner posts show some rough spots and small cracks in the wood, which is common with untreated pine over the years.
• There is no visible structural or functional damage: the frame stands firm, the connections appear intact, and the slatted base is present and whole.

The bed is fully functional and sells as a used but solid second-hand purchase.

💶 Original new price

The new price of the Piet Hein Eek junior bed, depending on the version and retail store, ranged between 570 and 800 euros, excluding a mattress. Scrapwood variants were generally at the higher end of that range (approx. 800 euros). Purchase was possible through Piet Hein Eek's own store in Eindhoven, specialized children's furniture stores such as Kindercompagnie, or webshops like Wehkamp.
